Some students attending Shalvey Campus travel by bus. If you live further than 2 km from School and travel by bus you are entitled to free travel to and from School. When you receive your Bus Pass keep it in a safe place. If you lose the Pass you will have to pay the Bus Company for a new one. When you travel on the school bus you must display conduct in keeping with the School Rules. If you do not co-operate the Bus Company may refuse you permission to travel on its buses.
Students are expected to behave in a responsible and sensible manner on their way to and from School. Because students are readily identified with the School whilst in uniform, unacceptable behaviour towards any member of the community will be considered a breach of School Rules even if the incident occurs outside the School grounds.
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
FOR STUDENTS
A bell will ring at 8.35 a.m. for you to proceed to your roll call room. A second bell will ring at 8.40 a.m for roll call to begin. Any student not present at the beginning of roll call is recorded as being late. Roll call ends at 8.48 a.m. at which time you will go to your classrooms for lessons according to your timetable.
Students are placed in a Tutor Group for Roll Call each day. These Tutor Groups are family groupings with students from Years 7-10 in each group along with their own brothers and sisters.
There are four groups of tutor groups. These four groups form the basis of the House System at Shalvey. The Houses and Tutor Groups are as follows:

LATE FOR SCHOOL
For Students: If you are late you should bring a note from home to explain why you are late. On arrival at School you must report to the Green Floor to have your attendance recorded and to get a late note. The late note must be shown to your class teacher. Persistent lateness to School will be dealt with at the various levels within the School, depending on the severity of each case. Lateness will also be recorded on Semester School Reports. If you arrive at School after 9.30 am you must report to the Office so that your time of arrival can be recorded and you will be given a note to permit you to enter class.
LATE FOR SCHOOL POLICY
For Students: When you are late to school after roll call has concluded, you are to report to the Late Desk where a Teachers' Aide will hand a note to you to be taken home and signed by your parent/caregiver. You will then proceed to class. The Late Desk will operate until 9.30am, after which you will go to the office.
A record will be kept of your lateness and of notes given and notes returned. Notes not returned for two successive mornings will be followed up and if you have not returned your note by the third morning, your name will be given to a Deputy Principal for follow up.
If you receive three late notices in one term you will be placed on a half-lunch detention staffed by the school executive and records will be kept of your attendance/non-attendance at detention.
If you do not attend a first detention your name will be forwarded to a Deputy Principal. You will then be given two detentions.
If you do not attend the additional detentions your name will be forwarded to a Deputy Principal. You will then be Formally Cautioned as well as having to attend the two detentions.
Formal Cautions will also be given to students who are given two separate detentions in one term for persistent lateness, at the discretion of the Deputy Principal.
If you are late again following a Formal Caution you will be suspended from school for continued disobedience.
The above process will be repeated following each individual suspension; that is, you are not automatically suspended again for your first lateness following return to school.
If you are suspended from school for this issue on two occasions throughout the year you will attend a case meeting on return from suspension with your parent(s), HT Welfare and HSLO.

ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL POLICY
For Students: When you are absent from School for part or all of a day a note is required from your parents or guardians. The note must be handed to your Roll Call teacher on the first day back. Your name, class, the days absent and the reasons should be stated on the note.
Parents Please Note: If your child is going to be absent for more than two days, it is helpful to contact the School, as Department Regulations require that the School send out a formal request for information after three days of unexplained absence. A written note from the parent is required when the child returns even if you phone the School (for filing purposes).

LEAVING EARLY
For Students: If you have a note requesting that you be allowed to leave before the end of the school day the note must be shown to your Roll Call Teacher during Roll Call and signed by the Roll Call Teacher and then taken to the School Office so that you can be issued with an early leave note. If for any reason you wish to leave the school early and you do not have a note from home you must obtain written permission from the Principal or Deputy Principals.
Warning: Absence from Sport can jeopardize the award of a School Certificate.
Attendance at School is compulsory until the age of fifteen and for those students remaining after their 15th birthday satisfactory attendance is required for the awarding of the School Certificate.
Parents have the right to expect that the school will notify them if their child does not attend School. After three days of unexplained absence the School will notify parents. Parents will also be notified of instances of truancy.

Each Tuesday a bell for Assembly will be rung. When you hear this bell you are to proceed immediately to your Tutor Group line in your House area in the main quadrangle.
If you become involved in an accident at School, report the matter to your teacher. If the injury is serious report the incident to the Deputy Principal. Sometimes it is necessary to send sick pupils home. Your parents will be notified by phone. If you are sent home you will be issued with a leave pass.
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT STUDENTS KNOW HOW THE SCHOOL CONTACT PARENTS. STUDENTS SHOULD KNOW WHERE THEIR PARENTS WORK AND THE TELEPHONE NUMBER. THIS IS IN CASE OF SERIOUS ACCIDENTS.
Parents Please Note: In the event of a serious accident or illness, beyond the competence of the School, the student will be sent to hospital and the parent notified.
Children should not be sent to School without adequate care being taken of injuries already received or if sickness is anticipated. The function of the school is to treat students and to assist them, if possible, to get through the school day.
A student will not be sent from School to an empty home when they are sick. Arrangements will be made with the parent/guardian for a sick student to be collected or sent by taxi to the parent/guardian or an emergency care contact (e.g. relative, neighbour).
No analgesic (pain killing) medication will be administered for any reason unless the medication has been ordered for the student by the student's doctor.
If it is necessary for a student to take medication during the day, this medication must be left at the office. Students are not permitted to have pills, etc. in their possession at School.
